CHAPTER 17

A few hours later, Aria stepped out of the station. The report was filed. Marcus had broken his restraining order. Again. Now there was a warrant out for his arrest. That was the best she could do. She had to believe it was enough and that they’d catch him.

Such a large part of her wanted to pick up and leave. To escape this town and hide from Marcus like she always did. But his words…

Don’t think about leaving, Aria. It wouldn’t take me long to get to you again—and then you’d regret it.

She didn’t want to believe him, but she did. He always found them.

He hadn’t said what he wanted. Why he’d suddenly shown up again. Which made her nervous as hell. Because he always wanted something. Money. A place to hide.

She slid behind the wheel and sent a quick text to Zac. When he confirmed he was still okay and with Anthony, she started driving home.

Zac. Her hands tightened on the wheel. Thank God no one had thrown a punch today. Marcus had hit her before, more than once, but he’d never hit Zac. Pushed him? Yes. That’s how he’d gotten the cut on his face, he’d landed on the corner of the coffee table. But never a fist to the face. She’d always dreaded the day Zac was angry enough to swing on his father. She knew it was coming, and the thought made her break out in a cold sweat. Marcus was a demon in the ring. He’d sent guys to the hospital with a single blow.

Don’t think about that, Aria.

She shot a look at her phone in her middle console. No text from Cole. She’d sent him two since Marcus had left, both asking to talk. She needed to talk to him. Tell him what was going on. The idea of pulling him into her mess made her feel sick to her stomach, but at the same time, she suspected he would know how to protect her.

Something inside her calmed at the thought. Something that had been tight and anxious since seeing Marcus in that gym. Hell, she’d been anxious for the last sixteen years.

She turned onto her street but frowned when she didn’t see Cole’s car in his driveway. Could he have parked in the garage?

She pulled into her drive and got out, once again glancing across the street. When she saw movement in Cole’s living room window, she headed to his house. Every step she took made her feel lighter. Made the trickle of hope that everything would be okay get that much bigger.

But as she knocked, something started to nudge at the hope—fear. She was about to tell Cole everything. About her dangerous, abusive ex. About how often she and Zac had run from the man. He already had cold feet. What if this was too much? Too heavy and complicated?

When the door opened, a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding whooshed from her chest. But it wasn’t Cole. It was Ryker.
